Founded in the 1850s, the heritage streetscapes of Heathcote reflect the town's gold rush past but it is the wineries of the area that are the major drawcard today. The first vines appeared in the 1860s, but it was not until the 1960s that the real wave of development occurred. The Shiraz grape is the main planting, with the Heathcote Shiraz being renowned for its unique character.

The ancient Cambrian earth is the iconic red soil that the vineyards of Heathcote are established on. This soil is widely regarded as the reason for the region’s unique Shiraz with distinctive fruit aromas and choc-mocha flavours.

Sourced from a single vineyard, the grapes for Taltarni Heathcote Shiraz 2016 were harvested in the cool of early morning and placed into open top fermenters where they could cold soak to maximise the flavour extraction. With fermentation starting naturally, the grapes were submerged under the wine with French oak planks. This was done to optimise the natural flavours of the grapes while extracting elegant, soft tannin. Once pressed, the wine was placed into a range of aged French oak barrels to further enrich and develop.

What's in the Glass

With a deep and vibrant red colour, this wine has intense aromas of fresh cherries and blackcurrants. These aromatics are enhanced with flavours of forest fruits and cocoa, all of which are part of the mouth coating medium palate wine. The slight hint of oak adds to the structure while the varietal shiraz flavours linger on the finish presenting a perfectly balanced wine.
